Google Business Profile vs Google Ads: Which Gets More Calls?

Marketing 1

If your business depends on phone calls, there’s an important question you should be asking:

Should I put my time and money into my Google Business Profile or Google Ads?

The answer for most local businesses is both—but they serve very different purposes.

A well-optimized Google Business Profile can generate calls from people who find your company organically on Google Search and Google Maps. Google Ads allows you to pay to get in front of potential customers who are actively searching for your products or services.

The key isn’t deciding which one exists. It’s determining which produces qualified calls at a cost that makes sense for your business.

What Is a Google Business Profile?

Your Google Business Profile is the business listing that can appear in Google Search and Google Maps.

It can display information such as your:

Business name • Phone number • Address/service area • Hours • Website • Reviews • Photos • Products • Services

Google says local rankings are primarily determined by relevance, distance and prominence. Complete business information, reviews, photos and other signals can help Google understand and display a business for relevant local searches.

One of the biggest advantages is that you don’t pay Google every time someone clicks the Call button on your organic Business Profile listing.

What Are Google Ads?

Google Ads is paid advertising.

Instead of waiting for your website or Business Profile to earn organic visibility, you can advertise when people search for specific products or services.

For example, a local company might advertise for searches such as:

AC repair near me

massage Spring Hill FL

vinyl fence supply near me

window replacement Brooksville FL

When properly configured, Google Ads can also track calls and determine which campaigns and ads are producing them. Google’s call reporting can record information such as call duration and whether the call connected, and calls meeting a specified duration can be counted as conversions.

That’s a major advantage when your primary objective is phone leads.

Which One Gets More Calls?

There isn’t a universal winner.

A strong Google Business Profile could generate more calls than Google Ads for one business, while another company might barely appear in Maps and generate substantially more business from advertising.

I look at it this way:

Google Business Profile = Build Long-Term Local Visibility

If you can rank prominently in Google Maps for valuable searches, your Business Profile can become an excellent source of ongoing calls.

But you can’t simply pay Google to improve your organic local ranking. Google specifically states that businesses cannot request or pay for better local ranking.

Building strong Maps visibility takes time.

Google Ads = Buy Immediate Search Visibility

Google Ads can put your business in front of potential customers much faster.

But every click costs money.

And this is where businesses get into trouble.

Paying for visibility doesn’t guarantee phone calls.

If your keywords, geographic targeting, ads, landing pages or conversion tracking are wrong, you can spend hundreds—or thousands—of dollars generating clicks without generating enough qualified calls.

The Biggest Advantage of Google Business Profile

Trust.

Imagine searching for a local contractor and finding:

Company A — 4.9 stars — 275 reviews

and

Company B — 4.2 stars — 17 reviews

Before you even visit either website, you probably already have an impression of the two companies.

Reviews, photos, business information and location all influence how a potential customer evaluates a business.

Google also provides Business Profile performance information, including the number of times customers clicked the Call button and the number of website clicks generated through the profile.

That’s information every local business owner should be monitoring.

The Biggest Advantage of Google Ads

Control.

With Google Ads, you can decide what products or services you want to promote, what geographic areas you want to target, how much you’re prepared to spend and when your advertising runs.

More importantly, you can analyze what’s producing results.

Google’s call reporting can connect calls with advertising activity, allowing businesses to evaluate campaigns based on phone conversions instead of relying solely on clicks.

That’s particularly valuable for businesses where a phone call can be worth hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Don’t Confuse a Phone Click With a Phone Call

This is something I pay close attention to.

Suppose Google Analytics reports:

50 people clicked your CALL NOW button.

Did you receive 50 calls?

Not necessarily.

A person can tap a telephone link without completing the call.

That’s why I like tracking different stages separately:

Phone-button click → Actual call → Qualified call → Sale

If you’re only tracking the first step, your advertising can look much more successful than it actually is.

Google Ads allows advertisers to establish phone-call conversion measurement and, depending on the configuration, qualify calls using duration or other available lead-quality measurement.

What About Google Maps?

For many local businesses, Google Maps should be a major part of the strategy.

Someone searching:

“electrician near me”

“AC repair near me”

“massage near me”

“fence supply near me”

often has strong buying intent.

But Maps results can vary depending on where the customer is located because distance is one of Google’s local ranking factors.

That means your company might rank very well when someone searches two miles from your business but much lower when someone performs the same search 15 miles away.

That’s one reason I don’t recommend judging local SEO by performing one Google search from your office.

So Where Should a Small Business Spend Its Money?

If I were working with a local business that relies heavily on phone calls, I wouldn’t automatically choose one over the other.

I’d build a strong Google Business Profile and local SEO foundation first, while using Google Ads strategically for valuable searches where the company needs additional visibility.

The two can complement each other:

Google Business Profile builds organic Maps visibility and credibility.

SEO builds organic website visibility.

Google Ads provides paid visibility for high-value searches.

Call tracking tells us which channels actually generate leads.

That’s a much better strategy than simply increasing an advertising budget and hoping the phone rings.

Measure Calls, Not Clicks

This is the part I believe many small businesses get wrong.

If you spent $1,000 on Google Ads and generated 300 clicks, that doesn’t tell me whether the campaign was successful.

Tell me:

How many calls did we receive?

How many were qualified leads?

How many became customers?

How much revenue did those customers generate?

Now we can determine whether the advertising worked.

The same applies to your Google Business Profile.

Don’t become obsessed with impressions while ignoring the actions that produce revenue.

Google Business Profile vs. Google Ads: My Recommendation

For most established local businesses, I recommend using Google Business Profile + SEO + carefully targeted Google Ads + accurate conversion tracking rather than relying entirely on one source.

Your Business Profile can build valuable long-term organic visibility.

Google Ads can fill visibility gaps and reach high-intent customers immediately.

And proper call tracking tells you which one is actually making your phone ring.

That’s the number that matters.

Is Google Generating Calls for Your Business?

If you’re spending money on Google Ads but don’t know where your phone calls are coming from—or your business isn’t appearing prominently on Google Maps—I can review the entire process.
